But at times due to corrosive environment or plant erected near coastal areas or chemical zones made of SS 204, SS 304 & SS 316 may face problems of corrosion.The most common forms of corrosion in stainless steel are:Pitting corrosion - In this form of corrosion a passive layer on stainless steel can be attacked by certain chemical species. It is avoided by ensuring that steel will not come into the contact with harmful chemicals. We can also choose the steel which is more resistant towards attack.Crevice corrosion - In this form of corrosion steel require proper supply of oxygen to ensure that a passive layer can form on the surface.General corrosion - Normally, stainless steel does not corrode uniformly as do ordinary carbon and alloy steels.
