Normal butyraldehyde (N-Bal), also known as butanal, is a colorless, flammable, volatile liquid with a pungent odor. It is miscible with most common solvents, such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, but is only sparingly soluble in water. N-Bal is the aldehyde of linear n-butane and is obtained from the hydroformulation of propylene (C3H6) with synthesis gas (CO+H2).
