Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), also known as cellacefate, is a polymer used as a pharmaceutical excipient, primarily as an enteric coating for tablets and capsules or for controlled-release drug formulations. It works by being insoluble at the acidic pH of the stomach but dissolving in the less acidic or alkaline environment of the intestines, allowing for delayed drug absorption. CAP also exhibits microbicidal properties, demonstrating in vitro activity against HIV-1 and other sexually transmitted disease (STD) pathogens.
