Category 6 (Cat 6) is a standardized twisted-pair cable for Ethernet and other network systems. It is backward compatible with Cat5 and Cat5e. Cat 6 is specified to operate at frequencies up to 250 MHz, which is higher than Cat5e (100 MHz) For Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T), a maximum total link length of 100 m is allowed (which includes patch cords and horizontal cabling) under standard conditions. For 10GBASE-T (10 Gbps over copper), Cat6 can reach only up to about 55 m under typical conditions before performance degrades; for full 100 m runs at 10 Gbps, Cat6A (augmented Cat6) is preferred.
