Ambemohar, hmmm..... , it just brings back the childhood memories. The sweet smell, the sweet taste, the juicyness.... Wow! The mouth watering aroma ambemohar gives while cooking, I am lost in it! Don't they show in 5 star advertisements? In the same way, I am lost in the aroma. I grew up eating this rice everyday at lunch! It is one of the traditional maharashtrian rice. Ambemohar, the word means ambe = mango, mohar = flowers. It was named as ambemohar because when cooked, a sweet aroma of mango flowers (mango blossoms) is filled up in the house. It is also inherently a sweet tasting variety of rice. Ambemohar rice is a main component of traditional food in maharashtrian families. It still continues to be a favourite, but many have shifted to Indrayani, Kolam, Suvarna and other high yielding varieties. Be aware there are 3 impersonators! Surti kolam from Gujrat, jeera sambar from Andhra Pradesh, and jawaful from Madhya Pradesh. Don't get fooled by them! Ambemohar is short in height and stout. It breaks easily while cooking, and also is a little bit sticky. But, the most important is the 'mango blossom aroma'.
