Panel Door

A panel door is a classic architectural design characterized by a "frame-and-panel" construction. Unlike a flat "flush" door, it is composed of several pieces—vertical stiles, horizontal rails, and recessed or raised panels. This design was originally engineered to allow solid wood to "breathe." Because the central panels are fitted loosely into grooves (they "float"), they can expand and contract with humidity without causing the door frame to warp or crack.
